Windmill Brixton

22 Blenheim Gardens SW2 5BZ London

Gig Description

Ritzy Cinema Strikers are putting on a fundraiser for the Picturehouse Workers on strike at the Ritzy and Hackney Cinemas.

We are forced into Industrial Action again in 2016 by our employers Picturehouses and Cineworld and need to raise enough money to ensure we can stay out on strike and finally win our campaign for the London Living Wage!

There's going to great bands:

Peluché
Whistlejacket
+ more

DJ's, food, a fun raffle and much more

Peluché

Funky London trio Peluche, made up of the beautifully named Rhapsody Gonzalez, Amy Maskell and Sophie Lowe, make frankly bizarre but altogether infectious indie-pop that doesn’t strive to be merely conventional.

Peluché create dreamy, enchanting pop bliss through beautiful ethereal harmonies, worldly bass grooves and counter intuitive twists. With diverse influences such as Fela Kuti, The Smiths and ESG - The trio carve out a unique and exciting sound of their own with nods to more contemporary artists such as Stealing Sheep and Warpaint

"To say their sound is eclectic is an understatement, often seeming to move between two or three genres in the space of one song, with wonderfully strange lyrics like "I want to see your face / It's not a hilly place" on the Vampire Weekend-esque Ohio." - iD-Vice (The 10 best new bands at Latitude festival 2016)

Whistlejacket

Hailing from South-East London with a sound to match, London has been whistling along to Whistlejacket throughout 2016 with increasing fervour. The chorus of bass heavy shoegaze, and soaring guitar hooks is now reaching new heights with the release of the band’s second EP, Oh Brother, via the influential London based Independent label, Fierce Panda – released 02/09/16.

Having supported the showbiz likes of Diiv, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, Yuck and Bully in London, in addition to becoming mainstays on the beaten up stages of East London’s alternative pysch scene – Whistlejacket have just returned from taking the show on the road with a two week tour in September across mainland Europe.

Whistlejacket featured at Hamburg’s Pysch Fest in addition to headline dates in The Hague, Amsterdam, Gronigen, Copenhagen, Hamburg, Leipzig, Saarbrucken, Munich, Berlin, Nyon & Zwevegem before arriving back home with a bang for a completely sold out headline show at London’s prestigious The Lexington on the 19/09.

Admirers of the band include The Horrors' Faris Badwan who described the band as "Hypnotic and immersive", X-Rocks Radio and BBC 6Music, with Whistlejacket getting regular air time & being invited to record an interview for the Steve Lamacq show & play an X-Rocks X-posure showcase at Camden’s Barfly.

The band’s second EP, Oh Brother is out now and has been twinned with their first EP ‘What I Ate on Sunday’ for a limited edition 12” release via Fierce Panda available here - http://www.fiercepanda.co.uk/shop.php?release=518

‘Amongst a cloud of psych-rock pretenders, Whistlejacket stand tall. Never straying too far from melody, never getting lost in their pedalboard, theirs is a noisy, captivating wall of sound which shines all the brighter for its pop sensibility.’ DIY

'Down at their rehearsal space / studio / party area, Whistlejacket have finally found a source of freedom. Able to make whatever noise they like whenever they like, the band have developed a sound that is by turns blistering and soothing, pastoral and quick direct.' Clash

“Standard bearers of the East London – alternative scene…” John Kennedy – X-Rocks Radio

“London's Whistlejacket are a bit of an unknown quantity at this moment in time. We suspect that their mysteriousness won't last for long if their recent batch of Slowdive influenced demos are anything to go by.” - Drowned in Sound

“Formed around swathes of roaring guitar noise, there is more than enough in and around that signature staple to make this new release both highly infections and often endearing” – Gold Flake Paint

“Banging sound – banging band!” Steve Lamacq - BBC 6 Music.
