Gig Description

Human Performance presents: Grand Pax at Shacklewell Arms promotional image

Annie Pax—the 24-year-old electro-pop singer-songwriter behind Grand Pax—is a bit of a mystery. A quick Google search leads only to “Control,” the Londoner’s 2017 collaboration with the UK production collective Gotts Street Park, and a few obscured, silhouetted photos. But with Grand Pax’s new single “Comet,” Pax emerges with the confidence to wield something as leaden as existential dread and make it irresistibly fun.

“Comet” opens with hyperactive drum fills that are smoothed over by watery guitars and a meandering, spacey synth line. Pax’s voice is distinct—clear, tender, and dipped in just the right amount of reverb (courtesy of Josh Crocker, who’s also worked with Kali Uchis and Rejjie Snow). The story she tells is both surreal and personal, tinged with the dystopian imagery of sunless, bleeding skies, a backdrop for her struggle with anxious self-analysis. “Maybe I know too much to get down,” she cries on the chorus, before she surrenders to the Earth’s orbital pull as a “comet incoming,” about to make landfall. “Comet” burns bright as a promising introduction to Grand Pax’s refreshing music, a soothing anthem for anyone prone to overthinking it." - Pitchfork.
