Folkroom put on the best folk gigs in London, run by writer and promoter Stephen Rötzsch Thomas, and award-winning musician Ben Walker. Through intimate, curated evenings and occasional record releases, Folkroom is proud to introduce our audience to incredible folk, country, Americana, blues and acoustic-led music from around the world.
Folkroom’s free fortnightly gigs (at The Harrison, Kings Cross) are our chance to show you what we’re listening to and loving. It’s always free, so come share a cider or three.
Folkroom Records was found by writer and promoter Stephen Thomas, and award-winning folk artist Ben Walker. The duo continue to run all things Folkroom today, but are supported by a fantastic team of friends and collaborators, headed by our regular London hosts Katie Carroll and Matt Glover, and sound engineer extraordinaire Miles Jarrett.
Our aim with Folkroom has always been to create a place where everyone feels welcome – the musicians, the audience, the extensive collection of photographers and designers who are every bit as vital to the Folkroom as the acts who grace our stages.
On the first of September 2010 we launched our first gig, and quickly found a community developing around the fortnightly events. The next logical step was to find a way to share the Folkroom sound with a wider audience, and with both the internet and wealth of abilities at hand, Folkroom Records came to being. Eager to make sure that we always keep our original principles in mind whilst running the label, a Folkroom manifesto was put together, and can be seen here.
Folkroom Records released our first album in December 2011 – a compilation featuring twelve of the finest bands playing the London scene at the time. Since then, the label has released a stack of EPs/albums and a two further Anthology records. Everything the label has released is available to download now from folkroomrecords.bandcamp.com.
