“Doors” is a self portrait work of Japanese photographer Yusuke Yamatani. For this performance he devised a special camera apparatus. Multiple cameras are positioned around a drum set in a dark space, and when he hits the drums the vibrations are picked up by sensors which in turn activate the camera shutters that photograph himself while creating flashes of strobe lights. The photographed pictures are then continually printed from several monochrome printers via a computer. In the performance, by continuing to violently hit the drums he induces a trance-like state, and he was able to capture self portraits that merge the conscious and the unconscious while facing the camera and the audience. The irregular speed of the shutter and the flash reverberating in the darkness leaves the residual image of his performance in the audience’s mind, and the photographs that are mass produced by the printer deliver a different image of himself to that which the audience sees. The process from the performance to the creation of the photographs evoke the complexity and distortion of human consciousness and perception.

Yusuke Yamatani
Yusuke Yamatani received wide acclaim for his early series “Tsugi no yorue“ which captured the fleeting nature of youth culture in black and white photographs. Since then he has been presenting a unique vision on the way of the world surrounding contemporary humans, with works on various themes such as the floors of music venues and clubs, his own honeymoon, city suburbs at night, and self portraits. In doing so and confronting the role of photographic media in society, he searches for new possibilities of photographic expression that oscillates between the straight and conceptual.
Born 1985, Niigata. Yamatani graduated from the Department of
Philosophy at Rissho University, and worked at Gaien Studio. He later relocated to Nagasaki where he met Shomei Tomatsu and other photographers from whom he learnt about photography. His recent exhibitions include “BEYOND 2020“ (KunstENhuis, Amsterdam/ amana gallery, Tokyo /Galerie Nicolas Deman, Paris, 2017), “Into the Light“ (BOOKMARC, 2017), Lianzhou Foto 2016 (Guangzou, China, 2016), “KYOTOGRAPHIE“ (Mumeisha, Kyoto, 2015), “FOUR FROM JAPAN“ (Condé Nast Gallery, New York, 2015) and Tokyo International Photography Festival (2015).

Nissa Nishikawa
Nissa Nishikawa works with performance, ceramics, painting, glass, and film. Her practice interprets traditional forms of dance, ritual and craft in ways that illuminate the current crisis in ecology and community. She engages with alchemical and animistic practices through the use of elemental base materials, forging processes of transformation that are intuitively informed by a close observation of the intelligence of nature and the non-human as systems of navigation. This ongoing fascination extends to the embodied principles of movement while bringing together many disciplines in one space.

Paz Maddio
Originally from Azul, south of Buenos Aires, Maddio is a guitarist and singer of London-based minimalist guitar-lead proto punk trio, Value Void. Their debut album “Sentimental“ was released in Oct 2018 via Tough Love Records.

Koichi Yamanoha
London-based artist Koichi Yamanoha is a former bass player and vocalist of noise pop group, Screaming Tea Party.
Yamanoha has been operating under the alias of Grimm Grimm since 2013. The solo project is an outlet for his fragile, haunted, otherworldly forays into baroque folk, futurist lyricism and electroacoustic oddities.
Born in Tokyo, Yamanoha's first solo record, 'Kazega Fuitara Sayonara’(When The Wind Blows), was released in late 2014 via Kevin Shield (My Bloody Valentine) and Charlotte Marionneau (Le Volume Courbe)’s Pickpocket Records in collaboration with Honest Jon's. This was followed up with his debut album, “Hazy Eyes Maybe”, was released by ATP Recordings in 2015 and a track “Last Word Is Mine” from the album was used over the end credits for the Aaron Brookner / Jim Jarmusch directed documentary film “Uncle Howard” featuring William Burroughs. The sophomore album, “Cliffhanger” was released in June 2018 via Some Other Planet Records.
His new 7” single remixed by Klein (Hyperdub)/ Killer-Bong (Black Smoker) was released via Koshiro Hino (goat / YPY)’s Osaka-based cult label, birdFriend in August 2019.
