Madeleine Rose Witney Jazz Quartet at The Victoria

Doors:

The Victoria

451 Queensbridge Road E8 3AS London

Gig Description

Madeleine Rose Witney and her Jazz Quartet are set to swing behind the bookcase for The Victoria’s first taste of Jazz.

Madeleine has built a solid foundation of followers thanks to her performances at high-profile venues across London, including The Royal Albert Hall, The Roundhouse and two sold out shows at The Jazz Cafe.

Don't be fooled by Madeleine Rose Witney's slight frame, tender years and polished elegance. Instead, look into her eyes, watch the sway of her body and listen to her words. For she is no conventional torch singer but a woman with a voice like velvet who takes every experience from her helter skelter life, wraps it in song and leads her audience on a journey into poetry, emotion and truth.

Born and raised in London, Madeleine found her voice as a young woman thanks to the music of jazz legends from the 1930s to the 1950s. Sarah Vaughan, Carmen McRae, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Anita O'Day and Julie London were the women who inspired her with their musicality, interpretation and feeling. What makes Madeleine such a unique talent is her skill at taking the techniques of those songstresses of yesteryear and bringing them into the 21st century.

Her live performances see her move seamlessly from traditional standards to her own songs, which draw a line from the swing of the jazz era with beatnik improv to contemporary sounds. Her themes are modern, relevant, sometimes outré, but always designed to engage and provoke. Bringing it all together is her often heart-rending original poetry. The live experience gives her audiences a glimpse into the life of this very contemporary young woman with a vintage soul.
