Gig Description

Colliding Lines present Reanimation, a new series of live film scores hosted at New River Studios. Each month we invite a diverse line-up of musicians and sound artists to re-score, re-interpret and re-imagine a programme of short animations, each month curated around a different theme and era.

For our 2020 launch event we explore avant garde Polish animation, inspired by artists Borowczyk and Lenica onwards.

Diverging from the social realism of the era, these films mark a golden age of experimentation in adult animation. At various points symbolic, metaphorical and philosophical, these graphically distinct and highly original works were a cinematic form of sabotage, of coded political critique. Through their embrace of diverse techniques, incorporating collage, photograms, stop-motion and cut-up editing, they ensured and advanced the artistic autonomy of animation as a medium.

Just as remarkable are the films sound design; as integral to the experience as the editing and narrative. We wish to pay tribute to these artists, inviting sonic responses from the following musicians:

– Martin Clarke is a composer, saxophonist and sound recordist working in improvisation, electroacoustic composition and field recording. Martin studied music at the University of Edinburgh and composition at the University of Birmingham with Jonty Harrison where he performed regularly with Birmingham Electroacoustic Sound Theatre (BEAST) in the UK and abroad.

Ingrid Plum uses her voice with extended technique, improvisation, field recordings and electronics, creating work that combines sound art, contemporary classical and folk music. Incorporating folk traditions and a student of Meredith Monk she is described by The Guardian as “gorgeously atmospheric vocal techniques woven around field recordings & electronics”.

– Reuben Kyriakides is a composer-producer. His MA thesis, recently awarded from Goldsmiths, focused on alternative tuning systems for the piano. Reuben is one half of Electric Womb, a duo interested in expressing beauty through satire and surreal narrative. He also writes music with his hiphop collective FUTURECUTIE.

– Mother Ivy is Nick Murray’s collaborative performance project. For this performance, Mother Ivy is Nick Murray and Antosh Wojcik.
