Doors:

Dublin Castle

94 Parkway NW1 7AN London

Gig Description

The Ukrainians – supported early doors by DJ John Peel, natch, these guys were always far, far more than a Wedding Present offshoot. Now 33 years since their inception, The Ukrainians were undoubtedly the first band to fuse punky indie rock and Ukrainian folk music. Peel’s listenership took them to their hearts immediately, and we’ve been doing so ever since, through a multitude of cool gigs and fascinating releases, from an E.P of Smiths songs to a fabulous cover of Slade’s Merry Xmas Everybody. Although we might not get that one in August… For this afternoon’s RNR Book Club special event we celebrate the advent of  The Ukrainians’ book ‘From Kyiv to the Kosmos‘ coming out thru Spenwood Books. From those early origins with The Wedding Present and John Peel, thousands of gigs around the world and 8 studio albums… Surviving Canadian bears, the Russian Mafia and even getting their music onto the Space Station, a great read no doubt, and thus expect an event full of  titillating tales and amazing acoustic songs with Peter Solowka, Len Liggins and co. With illustrative projections, an interview with Tony Gleed, Q and A, related DJ action and two sets of their sensational music, this is a must attend happening for any savvy music fan and committed Internationalist! Slava Ukraini!!
