Messi remains the story. At his fifth World Cup, he is tied with Kylian Mbappé on eight goals for the tournament and already owns the all time World Cup scoring record with 21. His corner set up the opener against Switzerland. Argentina arrive on a 12 match unbeaten run at World Cups, stretching back to the start of their winning 2022 campaign.

  England beat Norway 2 to 1 after extra time, and had to drag themselves through it. Andreas Schjelderup’s curling cross shot put Norway ahead on 36 minutes, and in the searing Florida heat it briefly looked like Erling Haaland’s side might end England’s tournament. Then Jude Bellingham took over. He equalised deep in first half stoppage time, and three minutes into extra time he pounced on a spilled save from Morgan Rogers’ long range shot to win it.
  VAR was busy all night. Norway had a goal chalked off for a Haaland foul in the build up, and England were denied a late penalty when Djed Spence went down in the box. None of it mattered in the end. Eight years after Russia 2018, England are back in a World Cup semi final.
  The journey so far
  England topped Group L, beating Croatia 4 to 2 in Dallas, drawing 0 to 0 with Ghana in Boston, and seeing off Panama 2 to 0 at MetLife Stadium. A Harry Kane brace rescued them against DR Congo in the Round of 32 after they fell behind. Then came one of the great World Cup nights, a 3 to 2 win over Mexico at the Estadio Azteca, finished with 10 men after Jarell Quansah’s red card. And now Norway.
  Five wins and a draw from six matches, twice coming from behind. Battle hardened does not begin to cover it.
  Kane has six goals at this tournament. Only two England players have ever managed that at a major tournament before, Gary Lineker in 1986 and Kane himself in 2018. Bellingham, with four, is the first England midfielder to score that many at a World Cup.
